Colors of white: What a difference a light can make! Snow might seem white, but observe it closer at the foggy morning, a sunny noon or cloudy afternoon before the evening dusk! There are all the colors from the former summer and autumn, hidden in tiny reflections, and with eyes opened wide one can even foresee all the hidden colors of the spring to come in a couple of months!
“I love to watch the fine mist of the night come on,
The windows and the stars illumined, one by one,
The rivers of dark smoke pour upward lazily,
And the moon rise and turn them silver. I shall see
The springs, the summers, and the autumns slowly pass;
And when old Winter puts his blank face to the glass,
I shall close all my shutters, pull the curtains tight,
And build me stately palaces by candlelight.”
Charles Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal
“O light! This is the cry of all the characters of ancient drama brought face to face with their fate. This last resort was ours, too, and I knew it now. In the middle of winter I at last discovered that there was in me an invincible summer.”
Albert Camus, L’été
